Studienkolleg Entrance Exam: Math Trainer

Many German Studienkollegs test mathematics in their entrance exam, the Aufnahmetest. The Aufnahmetest-Trainer Mathematik prepares you for this part: you practise without a calculator, with a time limit and with instant feedback in training.

Please note: The course is in German. This page describes it in English so you can decide whether it fits you. The checkout and the legal terms are in German as well.

What the course contains

  • Diagnostic test: eight tasks on the first eight core modules, 45 minutes. Afterwards you know which of these modules to start with.
  • 12 core modules: fractions, powers and roots, logarithms, algebraic expressions, linear and quadratic equations, fractional, radical and absolute-value equations, functions and graphs, geometry, exponential and logarithmic equations, inequalities, systems of linear equations, percentages and ratios.
  • 5 profile modules: for the T course (mathematics, science and engineering) trigonometry plus basic differentiation and integration, for the M course (medicine, biology, pharmacy) and the W course (economics and social sciences) interest, discounts and VAT, word problems and fast mental arithmetic.
  • 6 timed practice exams: multiple choice in 40 minutes, open tasks in 50 minutes and result-only tasks in 30 minutes, two versions of each. After you submit, you see which module to review.

That adds up to around 520 tasks across training, tests and the diagnostic test, with up to ten versions using different numbers, so repeating a task means real practice.

How you learn

  • Each module starts with a text that explains the rules with worked examples and shows the typical mistakes.
  • In training you get three attempts per task. After a wrong answer you get a hint, after the second one another hint, then the full solution.
  • A module test with seven tasks and 20 minutes tells you whether the topic is solid.
  • A computer algebra system checks your answers and recognises equivalent ways of writing a correct result. In calculation tasks, full marks require the final result, for example a fully reduced fraction. Decimal numbers are typed with a point, for example 2.5.
  • The course does not grade your working. If your college asks for it, write it down anyway while you practise.

Which Studienkollegs test math?

Not all of them. Frankfurt and Hamburg, for example, have no math part. Where math is tested, it usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, and a calculator is almost never allowed. The Kolleg-Kompass (in German) lists a selection of 18 Studienkollegs with duration, permitted aids and topics where published, each with a link to the official page of the college.

Price and access

  • 39 euros for 3 months of access. This is the final price: as a small business under § 19 UStG, Mathecampus does not charge VAT.
  • You learn on the Moodle platform. Access is activated automatically after payment. You receive an email with a link to set your password.
  • Access is for one person. You need a current web browser, a stable internet connection and an email address.
  • Mathecampus is not run by a Studienkolleg.
